Planning to raise poultry layers in the Philippines? These are amongst the most profitable along with the broilers if you have the right business model along with very effective poultry management techniques that help you maximize on production while cutting down on your losses. Here are some tips on layers management in Philippines so that you can produce good quality, marketable and healthy eggs and also make very good money from your Philippines poultry venture:-
- Transfer the pullets to the poultry layer house between 16-18 weeks or 3 weeks before they begin their laying period/cycle.
- After transferring the layers to the layer house, make sure you fortify their feeds, layers mash, with antibiotics and vitamins. This will minimize the effects of stress.
- If there are birds which show little signs of becoming good layers, cull them.
- The poultry typically begin laying eggs between week 20 to week 22. So you need to prepare for that adequately. The pullets will reach the peak production when they are between 30 and 36 weeks old. After this, the egg production will begin to go down before it levels off as the hens approach the end of lay.
- Once the hens have laid eggs for one year, they will go through a process called molting. Hens that molt early are generally very poor layers. Those that molt late are very good layers. After molting, egg production will rise again.
- In the second year of laying, the layers will produce anywhere from 10% to 20% less eggs than in the first year even under the best management practices.
- During the egg laying period, ensure that the hens are supplied with adequate calcium supplements such as limestone, or even ground oyster shells.
