One of the adverse effects of the Filipino summers is the prevalence of poultry diseases. If you are a poultry or gamefowl farmer or breeder in the Philippines, it is advisable to put in place more stringent biosecurity measures during the summers so as to prevent the spread of diseases caused by the rise in temperatures. The Philippines “summer” months run from April to May. It is not too early to begin making preparations so as to boost the chances of survival of your chickens and gamefowl.
Biosecurity is generally a broader term that encompasses various safe activities for your poultry farm but some of the measures you can take as these months approach is limiting the number of visitors that come to your farm. This will prevent contamination of the farm and possible spread of diseases as visitors to the farm generally bring with them carriers that can easily decimate your flock.
Additionally, it is important that you begin carrying out regular disinfection of your poultry farm including the premises where your chickens graze, the poultry barn, the equipment and tools used in the poultry farm.
In case you cannot avoid visitors to your poultry farm, it is advisable to begin carrying out proactive disinfection of the visitors including their shoes, gloves and vehicle tires. A good disinfectant that you can use for this purpose is Major D or Sterillium. This can be used in disinfecting their shoes, hands as well as the edges of their pants.
If you will be introducing new chickens or gamefowl into your farm, make sure that you quarantine them for a few days. This especially so for poultry that have been introduced into your farm from expos or even gamefowls that have been introduced into your flock from cockpits.
Major D is one of the best biosecurity products that you can use for the farm disinfections in the Philippines. This is a three in one disinfectant. Not only does it infect and get rid of the disease carriers, it can also be used as a detergent and a degreaser. It is relatively safe for use, even in the presence of your chickens. Because of these qualities, the routine disinfections with Major D are not only easier but also safer for your chickens. You don’t have to remove the poultry from their barn or shed when carrying out the disinfections.
Other problems that you are likely to face during the hotter months in the Philippines include respiratory diseases and heat stress which can affect their feeding and productivity, always adversely.
By taking proper biosecurity measures during this critical period, you will be preventing possible disease outbreaks that could damp your poultry farm productivity as well as profitability.
Apart from Major D, another product that you can use during the disease outbreaks is Microbarn which also has great disinfection properties. Micriobarn will help in killing off the viruses, bacteria and fungi in the poultry farm. This disinfectant is even effective on the bacterial pores which are generally resistant to the disinfectants commonly used in the Philippines.
